I have a friend that I always go to for travel recommendations. If she hasn't been there, it's likely she has done some research or knows someone that recently went there. I know her taste. And I know I can trust her recommendations. She is my personal travel muse. My travel guru.
This friend likes to take notes on her recommendations. Her method isn't super advanced or technical. Her recommendations usually live in a Google document that she is more than happy to share with me, or anyone for that matter. When I get that travel bible from her, I'm overwhelmed (in a good way) with all the restaurants and activities and special experiences she has curated over time in her documents. Her recommendations are always filled with gems that I know if I follow will ensure a special experience.
And this friend has a special system for highlighting the best of the best - a lobster icon she places next to the must-do or must-see attractions in a location. This lobster is my beacon, a symbol for a fabulous travel experience waiting to be had. It's also a bit of an inside joke that only friends know the real story about.
Experienced travelers know that sometimes the best experiences are found off the beaten path, away from the tour groups and backpackers who are following an established Lonely Planet itinerary. Tour groups and travel curators are valuable resources for many and will help you experience a new place fully if that's what you're looking for. But you risk sharing the experience with many others on the same path and risk being pushed towards activities that might not be the best fit for you or your tastes.
Travel Keeper was built to help you tap into the recommendations of someone you trust and to become that recommender yourself - the local guide who shares the go-to spots they love and want their loved ones to enjoy as well.
Reviews are subjective. They can be excessively glowing, overly critical, or confusingly off the mark. The challenge is finding review sources you trust that match your interests, tastes and budgets. Travel Keeper helps you tap into the knowledge of someone specific that takes pride in sharing their personal experiences.
So whether you are an experienced traveler or completely new to it, I hope you'll find value in Travel Keeper, either as someone who has recommendations to share or is looking for advice. No lobster symbols in the app (yet) but you never know…
